10 Ways to Stay Healthy During Pregnancy

What to expect at the hospital

Pregnancy can seem overwhelming and even a little scary for any woman. There's really nothing in life that can prepare you for this experience. There's also no reason to feel uncertain. Trust in your body, it knows what to do. Also, follow these steps to ensure a healthy, worry-free pregnancy.

Eat Healthy

Plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and healthy carbohydrates are all part of a balanced diet. Avoid too much sugar and fat, but don't feel guilty for indulging in your natural cravings. Remember that it is a myth that you are eating for two. You really only need around 300 extra calories a day, so don't feel pressured to eat more than you can.

Take Prenatal Supplements

To ensure you and your baby are getting everything you need, it's a good idea to support your healthy diet with prenatal supplements. These are packed with all kinds of good stuff your body requires during this time like iron and folic acid. Ask your doctor for recommendations.

Keep Prenatal Appointments

Maintaining your doctor's appointments is essential to keeping everything in check. Find a doctor that you feel comfortable with and start making visits early in your pregnancy.

Sleep Well

Being tired is a natural response that it even more prevalent in the first and the third trimester. Some women get a little frustrated at the constant sleepiness but try to not let is cause you stress. Your body needs the extra rest, so relax and enjoy a nap whenever you can.

Cut Down on Caffeine

While your first response to this fatigue may be to reach for that second cup of coffee, try your best not to. You really do need as much rest as possible and coffee will deter your body's efforts. Also, caffeine makes it harder to absorb iron, an essential element to a healthy pregnancy. Check all labels on your food and drinks to be sure you are not ingesting caffeine.

Keep Moving

Light exercise is encouraged to keep your heart and circulation strong, and to help with getting better sleep. Remember to stay hydrated at all times. Ask your doctor about the right amount and intensity of exercise for you.

Do Not Smoke

Pregnant or not, this is one of the single most important steps to take for a healthier you. It is even more urgent to quit if you are pregnant.

No Alcohol

This may be another no-brainer, but it is so critical that it always needs to be reiterated.

Eliminate Drugs

Any drug use, like alcohol consumption, will go straight to your baby's bloodstream. This goes for both illicit and over-the-counter drugs, so consult your doctor about any medications you are taking.

Nurture Mental and Emotional Health

Pregnancy can trigger so many emotions and the surge of hormones can make coping even more difficult. Always seek support from family, friends, and don't hesitate to speak to a professional.

It's important to adopt healthier living practices as soon as you discover that you are pregnant. Try to reduce stress and never hesitate to reach out for help if you begin to feel overwhelmed. You will get through this, and maybe even get in the habit of a healthy lifestyle for the long term.
